Living the Faith

A Faith Long Dormant

I went through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) in 2024-25. I joined the OCIA process for two reasons: I wanted to support my son on his journey to becoming Catholic and I wanted to reestablish the foundation of my own faith that I had been away from for decades. When I embarked on this spiritual journey, I was already baptized Catholic as an infant and had received First Holy Communion as a child in Argentina. A quarter-century ago, I made the decision to leave the country where I had lived all my life to move to the United States with my newlywed Californian husband.

Rediscovering the Eucharist

As part of the OCIA process, I attended weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings. Each week I rediscovered my faith little by little with the help of a group of devout Catholics. In January 2025, after attending weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings for a few months, I felt prepared, and I was eager to receive the Eucharist again. The OCIA reminded me of the powerful meaning of reconciliation. I went to confession after decades and as a result, believe I am a better wife and mother. I even had my marriage blessed.

Confirmation and Convalidation

The most meaningful moments of my journey of becoming Catholic were having my marriage convalidated and receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in February 2025. Receiving Confirmation reinforced the presence of the Holy Spirit within me. Entering a Sacramental marriage reinforced my commitment to the Church and its teachings. Taking the first step toward becoming a dedicated Catholic was my biggest challenge. My son's desire to be baptized prompted me to take that first step. I am very grateful for that gift.

Once I let my guard down, I understood that I was wrong. I no longer believe my life is centered around me and I feel relief and gratitude.

I now enjoy following Christ and living a life that reflects the teachings of the Church. I am excited about going to Mass and receiving the Eucharist with my family every week. I am connecting with parishioners. I was fortunate to serve as a chaperone for the St. Isidore Youth Pilgrimage to Rome this summer. I experienced a remarkable opportunity to witness the spiritual growth of young people and to reflect on my own faith journey. Thanks be to God for this one-of-a-kind chance!

I am thankful for the support of the St. Isidore community and my sponsor Cathy. Cathy is a dedicated Catholic, a beautiful human being and an inspiration to me. I felt supported by others, too, such as Daisy, Melissa, Julia, Natalie, and Shawn. I look forward to connecting with other parishioners as well. Thanks to OCIA, I was given the wonderful opportunity to grow in a deeper relationship with Christ. Thank you, Father Matthew and Lesli, so much for everything you do for us. You are a blessing!
